tumnus pants (andrew)
I finally found an upper limit to Darwin’s sense of what’s visually outrageous. When Darwin first joined my band, Creaky Boards, back in 2007, he was the freak of the band. The Wes Borland. And I was so happy to have someone like him aboard. I soon crossed over to the Deez project, and I was tickled to be in a band where it seemed the sky was the limit with stage outfits. The weirder, the better. I started following Darwin’s avant-garde lead, and later on, Cole’s, and have ended up exploring some funky territory of my own. At a Goodwill back in Seattle, Cole and Greg dug up some especially absurd clothes, giggling as they handed them to me. Giant furry grey sweatpants that make you look like a faun, and a tie-dye onesie. “Careful now, Hoepfy,” Darwin chuckled skeptically. I could tell that I had at last crossed the line. I hadn’t even been sure there was a line. But these were some fuckin’ ridiculous clothes. Out of respect for the fact that it’s Darwin’s project, I decided to sit on them for a bit. But our Monday Memphis show was a modest turnout, so I brought out the Tumnus pants.
After the Memphis show, I played my first game of chinese checkers at Eileen’s house, a friend of Darwin’s from North Carolina. I won!
One thing that continually strikes me is meeting all these people my age living in houses. Fucking houses. I rent a bedroom in a 3 bedroom apartment with no living room. No kitchen table.
Eileen recommended Payne’s BBQ a few streets down. Feeling a little silly, I called up the place and inquired, “Do you…have any vegetarian food?” “No,” the voice answered, simple as that. Being that we are in the south, I decided to defect from my vegetarianism and take a detour into barbecued pork sandwich land.
Like my friend Yoko Kikuchi back home, Miles has a tradition of doing jump photos. He took my first jump shot outside of Paynes. You can see my Tumnus the Faun pants in the shot. Darwin loved the photo. “This is gonna end up in your Scar Tissue,” he laughed. “The face. The clothes. The jump. The BBQ. The caption will say, ‘Andrew in the middle of the Darwin Deez US tour, 2011.’ This sums it up.”
